One of the main aspects that have always made PCs stand out, was that consumers had the option of either buying a pre-built machine, or building their own. Last week we took a look at some of the basic components of a PC and it can be surprisingly easy to build a PC yourself from those components. This week let’s look at the decision making process involved when choosing whether to build or buy that new computer.

The HP Pavilion Sleekbook 15 is an interesting machine. It is not small, but somehow its thin and light. It is not super expensive but somehow still manages to still pack power and not feel at all cheap. At first glance it is not super fancy, yet it still packs touchscreen functionality. It is a machine that is really full of surprises A lot of things this PC can do I would expect from a machine twice the price. In this price range, other machines will have a few of these features but this one seems to have it all. Big screen, thin and light, good power, and a touchscreen. It a great well rounded machine.

So, you know how to browse the internet, listen to music and check your email but do you really know much about the ins and outs of computers? Do you know what the major components are? Do you know what all those acronyms and terms mean? Do you know all the different types of connectors? Over the next weeks we’re going to start looking at computers starting with the basics, and going through everything step by step. By the end you should know a whole lot more about computers, how they work, how to build them, how to upgrade them, and what everything does. To many people they’re just big mysterious boxes but really they’re a lot more straightforward and understandable than most people think. There is no reason to be intimidated at all. We’ll take baby steps and the more you take, the more comfortable you’ll be with them.
