The Latest and Greatest in HDTV, Flat Panel, and Projector Technology
HDTV technology has become the standard for TVs in most homes, replacing the large, bulky CRT-based TVs from yesteryear. Future Shop carries a huge range of flat screen HDTVs, including LCD, LED, Plasma, OLED, projectors, 3DTVs, Smart TVs and 4K UHD TVs. You can even get flat screen TVs with an amazing curved screen display. There are a ton of models out there to choose from with a huge array of features from manufacturers like Samsung, Sony, LG, Insignia, and more. Here’s a quick primer on the TVs available in our stores and our website.
LED is the latest iteration of LCD display technology, only the backlighting is powered by tiny light-emitting diodes (instead of the fluorescent lamps used by LCD TVs). These small lights make the display capable of producing a remarkably bright image, while using a fraction of the energy of a conventional flatscreen. And because of their small size, manufacturers can produce panels that are less than an inch in depth.
Flat screen Plasma displays are known for producing truer-to-the source colours, making them the ideal choice for watching movies in dimly-lit environments. Plasma technology generates incredibly deep blacks and amazing contrast ratios, creating an incredibly rich picture and making them ideal for film buffs. They also deliver amazing HD images for games, shows, and sports.
One of the newest display technologies, OLED uses organic light emitting diodes to create colours and lights. This cutting-edge technology results in better viewing angles, faster refresh rates, better contrast, and incredible colour reproduction. One of the coolest things about OLED TV is that the screens can be flexible or curved, which provides amazingly immersive viewing angles.
4K (UHD) TV
The previous gold standard for TV resolutions was Full HD 1080p, but it is rapidly being replaced by 4K (also known as Ultra HD or UHD). With up to four times the resolution of 1080p, 4K TVs create pictures with resolutions so mind-blowingly sharp it feels like you’re looking through a window rather than at a screen. Flat screen LED TVs with 4K resolution are hitting the market and blowing everybody away.
The term “Smart TV” generally refers to a TV that has wireless connectivity so it can access additional content on the Internet or through other devices on your wireless network, like your computer. Some newer Smart TVs have wireless capabilities built in, while other models require an add-on dongle to hop onto a network. Most Smart TVs can stream video and music and play apps, and some even respond to voice and gesture controls. SmartTVs open up whole new worlds of entertainment possibilities, like streaming movies and TV shows from Netflix, social updates from Facebook and Twitter, and online video chatting through Skype (with a compatible camera add-on).
If your current TV isn’t “smart” and you want to give it an IQ boost, you can add a set-top box like a Roku or Apple TV, or use internet-connected video game consoles like the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.
When you really want to get deep into the action there’s nothing better than a 3DTV. It allows your entertainment to leap off the screen and pull you into a completely immersive experience with your HD movies.
There are two major advantages to having an HD projector. The first being that you can create a huge image, beyond 100 inches in size. The second is the fact that there is no heavy display involved, just the small projector (which often takes up less room than a printer), and a projector screen or a wall.
Projects are versatile machines: You can use them in meeting rooms, media rooms, or even smaller spaces with the wall as a screen. Some projectors can even allow you to watch a movie outdoors. Future Shop carries projectors from a wide range of reputable manufacturers including Epson and BenQ.
