High Definition and Standard Definition Webcams
Whether you’re staying in touch with a friend across town, or letting your kids chat with their grandparents in another country, a
webcam (or
web camera) is a great way to enjoy face-to-face communication with loved ones around the world. Pick up a webcam for your desktop computer, or get a high quality web camera as an upgrade from the one built into your laptop, and enjoy the freedom to video chat with anybody who has an Internet connection and a webcam of their own.
When you’re shopping for webcams, consider the resolution and frame rate. The higher the resolution the better your image will look to the person on the other side, and a higher frame rate (30fps is a good starting point) will make your video look smoother. Webcams are available in standard or high definition – the latter is perfect for video podcasters or anybody who just wants to look really, really good on the screen. Most webcams come with built-in mics, so you won’t need to get a separate microphone for your computer, and some webcams even feature face-tracking – if you move around the room the web camera will move with you, keeping your face front and centre.
