Very nice images.

There is a problem with this lens and that is it will not match all cameras unless you are lucky. What I mean by this is you may have to adjust your cameras micro adjustment to get the best out of it. On my 2Ti its average(no micro adjustment) on my 5Dmk3 its my most used lens, but I have set the micro adjustment to +5, which is not possible on the 2Ti. Also the camera settings make a difference. This lens works best at a speed of 500+ and an f stop of 7-8. If you want proof check my FB site out "glass and nature", most shots are taken with this lens especially the humming birds.

Too Expensive for the Quality

I have tried a few "L" series lenses, but why this 100-400mm lens continues to sell at this price is a mystery to me. It simply does not deliver the image quality or the versatility I would expect in this price range. Pros: It is very solidly built "L" quality. It delivers a focal length not found at this build quality. But that's where it stops. Cons: It is "push - pull" lens, which draws air into the lens on every "pull" stroke. This is not a good idea when you consider that every time you operate it, you draw in dirt which either sooner or later, will kill this lens. Depending on enviroment where you use the lens, life could actually be very short. Also because of this design, the bearings on the sleeve are exposed to dirt. The other issue I found was that the image quality simply was not good. I may have had a bad copy, but the quality of the images were mediocre at every focal length. Most appeared slightly over-exposed, and all were on the "soft" side. I don't think a zoom lens, especially of this design should be this heavy; it's a brute to use effectively. I would not reccomend this lens to those looking for "tack" sharp images. I would reccommend it to someone with strong arms, and a need to photogragh larger wildlife at a distance, this lens would shine here. For the price, I would definitely look at other options.

Canon EF 100-400 f4.5L

I bought this fine lens from the good people at Future shop several weeks ago. So far my impressios are fairly positive. Keep in mind this is an old lens that has been kicking around for quite a few years. The zoom mechanism is push/pull. That is quite simple to operate, yet it comes at a cost: When you 'pull' the zoom, you are creating a partial vacuum inside the lens which could draw dust into your camera. The images are razor sharp as what is demanded by anyone buying the upper crust of the Canon Lens line. It comes with a very nice double zippered bag that can also be carried outside your photo bag. At 5 lbs I strongly recommend that you use the tripod attachment that comes with this heavyweight. Doing otherwise could compromise your camera lens mount or your camera's tripod receiver. I have never used this lens without a tripod as the 4.5 min f-stop makes this a rather slow senior citizen. If your needs encompass fast action sports, I recommend some of the 'over the top' Canon tele prime lenses. However at 6 to 15k$, that is not an option for most of us unless you are making solid money from your work. For the image quality, the great range, and a lens hood long enough to double as a spare stove pipe, I still consider this lens a pretty good deal that I have had great results with...so far. Btw: If you want to turn this L lens into an inferior lens - add a multiplier. Highly not recommended.

extenders beware

I have this lens and it is very well built and performs excellent. I have the 1.4x II extender and it works fine but the autofocus is disabled. Without an extender, the USM focuses quickly, quietly, and accurately. The lens is fairly heavy and I suggest using a support to get the sharpest photos.
