High-performance, L-series telephoto zoom lens combining light weight and compactness with an f/4 maximum aperture. Inner focusing and the ring USM enable quick and quiet auto-focusing. Also, a circular polarizing filter can be attached and used without difficulty because the front lens element does not rotate during focusing.

More Information

The EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is a lightweight, compact L Series telephoto zoom lens with Image Stabilizer. The optical Image Stabilization in the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lens provides up to an incredible four stops of shake correction-a first for Canon IS lenses. The use of fluorite UD lens elements provides excellent optical performance in terms of resolution and contrast. These features, together with its water-and dust-proof construction, provide both the performance and portability to meet user demands.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS

This is one of my "trinity" of zooms I use on my 40D and 50D. If you never have tried a a professional level lens (they are called "L's in Canon-ese), you will be shocked at how smooth and solid a lens like this is! On a crop sensor (where it "looks like" a 112-320 on a full frame sensor like a 5D Mk II), it has incredibley excellent IQ (Image Quality) compared to less expensive lenses. The four stop IS allows you get photos you would never even attempt otherwise. This lens is surprisingly useful for scenics and landscapes (you can isolate on specific features), plus long enough for some wildlife shots. Pair it with a 1.4X teleconvertor and on a cropped sensor camera you get an effective 157-448mm f/5.6, long enough for some great bird and other nature shots, plus some interesting close-up effects. Not inexpensive, but remember, it's what the pros use (some use the f/2.8 version, too) ... It would make a ideal second or third lens for a Canon DSLR owner who already has the so-called "kit" or standard lens.

Not cheap, but you won't be disappointed!

This is a fantastic lens.. 1. very sharp 2. reasonably fast (constant f/4-nice) 3. superb build, and quality. 4. flawless implementation of IS. 5. L glass image-quality..contrasty, slightly warm. 6. CA, vignetting, and distortions are all minor on an ASP-C body. 6. Smaller filter size, making filters cheaper. You get all the greatness of the 70-200 2.8L IS USM, with equally-great image quality, 1/2 the weight, better IS system..all at 2/3 or less of the 2.8's price. I've taken decent shots with a 2x teleconverter on(hand-held) at 1/5s shutter-speed..@ 400mm; 1/6-1/8 is no problem..this IS rocks. :O Negatives: 1. still rather expensive..but worth it. 2. you don't get the tripod-ring, only comes standard with the 2x 2.8's. 3. Not quite as fast, and not quite as nice of bokeh vs. the 2.8...but very close. 4. Not as fast for fast-action/indoor sports..although the better IS allows slightly slower-shutter speeds in non-action shots(making up for the extra stop). I use a cheapo Rebel XS(1000D), with the EF-S 18-55mm IS kit-lens, EF 100mm f/2.8 macro USM, EF 50mm f/1.4 USM, and this(and i have a 1.4x and 2x teleconverters). This is my favorite, and spends most of the time on my camera. I fully recommend it, and am very happy i bought it! :D
