I bought it less than a year ago it worked fine the first two months then it slowly got worse. First it just required resetting by unplugging, wait ten seconds, replug, wait for it to load, then wait for it to connect to whatever you were watching (for me its usually netflix or youtube) after all that work it works for ten minutes and your back where you started. It's a waste of time and money, not to mention all the mental anguish it causes you in the process. I HATE IT!!!!! DO NOT PURCHASE!!!!

Easy setup and use

I was nervous after reading some of the reviews but it was a great price so I decided to take the chance, and I'm so glad I did. I had absolutely no trouble setting it up and it works great!! I love that we can watch Netflix and YouTube so easily, and that it takes up so little room.

Worst Support Ever experienced anywhere

Bought this product after my Samsung Blu Ray player broke and couldn't be happier! The quality of picture on this little machine is fantastic, almost better then my old blu ray player!! Doesn't take up much space on my counter, connects to WiFi quickly and holds the connect. Never had a problem with buffering or freezing. Would recommend this product to anyone interested in a product to steam Netflix or YouTube! I give this product a 5/5 star but my mobile device won't let me change it from a 4/5!

Tolerable for price...barely

Slow and cumbersome compared to the Roku we use with our primary TV. NeoTV streamer often stalls and goes blank after displaying the startup logo...great advertising. Only fix is to perform a hard reset and reprogram all the set-up info.

Not impressed

Bought it for Netflix mainly. Constant buffering and dropping off the internet. Very slow remote control interface.Tried wired and wireless but made no difference. Soldiered on for a year and went back to using the old xbox 360. Perfect.

as advertised

Product worked great, connected to tv and turned it on, a quick update and I was online. I have not tried WIFI as the distance to router was short and easy to run cable. I would not hesitate to recommend this product.

bought this for netflix, it sucked. wouldn't work without upgrading. new product, need upgrading , why? well all movies buffered , all shows buffered.couldn't watch nothing, friend said just download netflix app for free on my phone, tablet, computer, well I did, it worked, same router same internet same area further away from router and it was free, no need to buy netgear just for netflix, go get the app for free and start.watching

seriously, all the rant and raves, really. and why are the ranters getting so defensive. look at majority of the reviews. that speaks volumes. I don't know about anybody else, but I bought one and after hooking up smelled burnt wires and saw smoke coming from this, took it in to inspect it so I can hand the report over to better business bureau, wires are not of proper specs for north American , wires are cheap and brittle, motherboard is poorly designed, can cause failure to function properly, may and can cause a fire, was told some foreign products will ship good quality to be inspected prior to approval for sending products into north America then switch to cheapest parts as possible just to increase the profits. yes some places use child labour still. it is buyer beware. get something with a real name brand they stand behind. no stars .

Does EXACTLY what I wanted it to

Lot of whining here about this device. I plugged in and away it went. The update took, what - a minute? That guy with a 45 minute update time has other issues and it's not Netgear's fault. It's set up in a bedroom with two walls between it and my router. No buffering, no lag time, no nothing wrong at all. I suspect people here have crap routers or something but don't blame the product for all these issues.

You people expect too much

I bought this mainly so that my family would stop hijacking my Wii u for Netflix while I was playing a game. Setup was incredibly easy and Netflix runs beautifully. It takes 5-10 seconds for video to get to full HD quality but I experience no buffering or stuttering. While navigating through the Netflix interface, box art for films loads almost as fast as I can scroll through them. To be fair I have the device in the same cabinet as my router, so it's connected via the ethernet port. I could see how people with poor wifi setups would have problems. I also tried the roku 3 device at the same time. It is a slicker device for sure, but it's not $80 better than the net gear. Especially when you consider that you need to give roku your credit card # just to run the device. Took that back pretty quick. Besides Netflix and YouTube there were also a few other useful channels, though you could easily get pretty much all the content of these channels from YouTube itself and easier too. The YouTube app kicks butt when linked to your smartphone or tablet. When I tried the roku I found it had a better tune in app, and as well as crackle and some handy food network channels which added value. I suppose if I really wanted them then the roku 1 or 2 would be a better value to me than this box. For all those moaning about the lack of free content I'll just say this: Google "android mini pc+xbmc+icefilms" and call it a day.

I bought for my parents to watch Netflix, because the Roku was sold out, what a mistake. I do own an Apple TV so I know (should) what I can expect from a similar device and have used a Roku as well. This thing shouldn't be allowed to be sold at all as it is a complete rip off. The interface is horribly slow, the remote is more than just awkward. Turn the device on for the first time it prompted to install an update, this took 45 minutes. After rebooting again another update was available, again took 45 minutes. Starting the Netflix app takes a very, very long time, selecting what you want to watch as well. Finally starting to buffer but you guessed it, takes forever to start playing. Then after 5 seconds it started buffering again, 5 seconds playing, buffering etc, etc. The WiFi router is right next to it, every other device works fine, tablets, pc, phones and even the Apple TV. In short, not worth the frustrating believe me, avoid like the plaque.

Working for me

Only bought it to watch netflix which is running good. Only issue was to move router closer. Don't know why people complain about it not having a hd cable with it, they are always extra. Price as right.

I expected more, these channels, 3/4 is in foreign language, useless. can play 2 games the other few you have to pay, almost all channels you have to buy. can not add any channels to this junk ever. so what it comes with your stuck with. already obsolete before you buy it. the positive reviews got me and the price got me, biggest regret, wished I paid attention to the majority of the reviews. go by the majority of the reviews and you will find these reviews are for a good reason true..

worst product ever

worst investment I ever made. went by some of these positive reviews, worst mistake I ever made. first of all tablets and iPhone and android phones have you tube already on them, you can download netflix for free on it. the streaming is far better than this waste of money, this is junk plastic. buffer non stop. takes 4 1/2 hours to watch 45 min movie without commercials. rude customer service that don't care cause they got your money ..too bad for you.., absolutely can't add any channels to this , not.like roku that keeps adding channels. the positive reviews are obviously paid for their rant and raves and or free junk box. took this junk back and picked up the roku, far happier ,tons of channel on roku plus always adding more, love the roku.

Works Great for Me!

I am very happy with it's performance. It was very easy to set up and I find it connects to my WIFI with a strong signal (I had previously attempted to set up my WIFI capable Samsung Blu-Ray player in the the same spot to use it for Netflix, etc, and couldn't get a good connection). I have used it so far for Netflix and Youtube mainly and the picture quality is great. I like the ability to pair it with an IPAD or Android tablet for Youtube. This feature makes Youtube searches much easier. As others have said, some of the other Apps may not be very useful, but I have found several that I like. Great value for what I wanted!

don't come with a cable that Is needed to work. constant buffering, can't watch anything. can't keep up with internet. kept freezing all the time, had to unplug and plug in again and start all over again. only couple English channels no French channels, rest in foreign language. rude customer service, so ignorant and disrespectful. got money back, will never own netgear product ever again. will not give money to be disrespected will never own netgear refuse to own netgear. check online and investigate netgear you won't like it. go by majority of reviews. if majority is good then you should be fine, if majority is bad reviews then avoid. call customer service before you buy , ask questions find out what your getting. buyer beware, avoid headaches and buy something with a known reputation and stand by their product with pride.

Did not work well with Slingbox

The main reason why I bought this was to watch my Slingbox on another TV set. I was very disappointed...I don't know if my unit was defective or if it worked as designed, but it was very slow at starting the Slingbox app, and once the app was up and running, getting the Slingbox controls on the screen was virtually impossible. Clicking on the "menu" button on the remote would reveal the Sling controls for a brief moment, and they would disappear almost immediately. I had to click multiple times for the controls to "stick" to the screen and be useful. I've returned the unit, and bought a WD TV Play instead, which works much, much better. Don't waste your time with the NeoTV!

Just dont buy it. The thing only connects to the internet when it wants to. It usually doesn't want to connect at all. Tried wired and wireless. Go with a WDTV or Roku.

Doesn't work well on DSL. Do not buy

This unit doesn't work very well on DSL connection running at 7.0. It is constantly buffering and freezes frequently. I had to return the unit and I purchased a Roku unit. The Roku has worked perfectly since I purchased it. I do not recommend this unit unless you have a cable connection.

Frozen, can't reboot, can't reset!

I bought this product, took it home, plugged it in, set it up, and was prompted to perform a software upgrade. Stopped working. The reset button doesn't work either. It's a paper weight.

rip off

I make little money, and bought this to get rid of mafia cable. this is not what I expected. yes it has netflix and few games but couple games free then pay for rest. never heard of these games. mist stuff that's loaded isn't English. can't get more stuff on the media player. don't be fooled by the price, there is a reason it's the cheapest one on the market. spend a little more and.get something better, and when I say something better, I mean avoid netgear products at all cost. the only ones happy with this crap are employed.by netgear giving huge raves or ones that only want 1 channel ( netflix). you spend your hard earned money you expect more. this thing didn't even come with the much needed hdmi cable to work

I know what your thinking, it's cheapest one on the market. price not bad to check it out. hooked it up and guess what if you want netflix and few games then go for it. if.you want more, forget it. there is no web browsing and you can't add channels. can't download anything to this player. what it comes with your stuck with. not to mention, most channels are not in English.

limited to what is already loaded on box. can't add to this. but the only good thing I'd netflix and.few games feel like I got ripped off. stuck it in basement tv. for the kids. you also.have to spend more money for Hemingway cable cause it.won't work without it and it don't come with it. buy their product and you expect them to send everything to get going but nope more pocket expense. not happy.

I like it!

We bought this for the TV in the family room to watch netflix. I works exactly how I expected it to. The picture quality is great, I adjusted my Netflix account to a lower resolution and it works perfectly. I have had it freeze once or twice certainly not enough to negatively impact my satisfaction. For the money this is awesome. I don't regret my purchase at all.

Love it!

Just got this today, it was a breeze to set up and the kids are enjoying Netflix. Yes, there is a slight lag when changing programs but no more than I would expect. I think the amount of lag could be from speed of internet.

i see people leaving reviews of this being slow this is true. it takes this unit a few seconds to open what you have selected. But streaming wise it works great. I would recomend this if your just using netflix or youtube.

returning this product asap

i know its cheap, and i know it works...well somewhat. However, it does not work very good. Tried to watch two movies on NetFlix and priop to starting movie, neotv would freeze. Not once, not twice, but 8 times. It took me 30 minutes to finally watch the first movie. Returning it today.

Works fine once it is up and running, but don't count on using the WiFi unless you have a super strong signal. I tried several attempts to use WiFi, even going as far as to set up my repeater within 8' of the Neo. Total distance from my router is about 20'. When I finally gave in and ran a wire to it it was ready to go. trying to access certain channels will cause a freeze up needing a full power off to reset it. I mostly use it for Netflix which works fine but soon tired of experimenting with other channel offerings as they are not available here in Canada.

So So product

Bought this so I could watch Netflix on the TV. It works ok but as one other reviewer puts it there is a big lag with hitting the remote button and having it happen on the screen so much so you are not sure if it took or not. Also if I had not been thinking at the time I would have gotten home and realized I needed a cable. Make sure you pick up an HDMI cable or you will be making another trip. Would be nice if they included it but I suppose if they did include it and you happened to already own one you would be paying for it when you did not have to .

A near perfect media streamer

Right out of the box this device takes but a few minutes to setup and configure. The well-built remote has nice , clearly labeled buttons for direct access to popular streaming services like Netflix, YouTube , and more. This makes it ideal for grandparents and other less technical folks. It works well with either a wired or wireless network connection. Also, from the moment you connect it to the Internet the device will look to see if there is newer firmware available and if so prompt you to update. Current version is 1.0.68PA. The only drawbacks to it are the lack of a USB and no DLNA capability. That means you cannot play your own content on this device. Also there is no included HDMI cable so make sure to pick one up if you don't have one already. Other than that, this device rocks. Very small, unobtrusive design. Super easy to install and get running. Highly recommended!

Lags a bit but worth the money

I never had one of these devices before so I decided to give it a try, overall I am impressed with the video quality however the hd for Netflix isn't as good as a ps3 etc butbetter then the wii quality. I like the large selection of channels it provides however some of them aren't supported in Canada ie vudu. Finally the lag, basically if you like to multitask then this is not for you as it has the tendency to freez up if you try to quickly end Netflix then go to YouTube then home etc but as long as you give it time it works flawlessly. So personally I would buy this again, and hopefully this review helps your decision
