Works well, but limited

Purchased this device primarily to stream Netflix to a dumb (non-smart) TV. Device works well, however please be aware of the following negatives: -before you can use it, you need to register and create an account with ROKU. (Do a google search for "ROKU nocc" for instructions on how to do this without providing credit card details) -Netflix app on ROKU 1 does not support Netflix Profiles.

Roku 1 Streaming Media Player

Player is OK... HD is a problem for people with limited G-bytes.. Video-connections suck. Problem in Canada is the limited availability of shows/movies unless you subscribe at unreasonable rates to various providers. Really the only thing available that is free and not interrupted every few min with repetitive commercials is junk programs.

Nice for the price I paid.

I also own an Roku 3 which is so much faster than the Roku 1 but my Roku 3 bricked so I bought the Roku 1. It works fairly well but a little slower at loading content and the UI is a little sluggish compared to the Roku 3. I did pull my Roku 3 out of storage again to see if I could get it going again and sure enough it came back to life and updated to the latest firmware. I'm now back to the Roku 3. If you have the money get the Roku 3 but the Roku 1 will be just fine if you don't mind waiting a few extra seconds for the content to load.

Negative one star reviews

Been using Roku 1 for a couple of years. Excellent picture and easy to use. The 1 star review re credit cards - not so. You don't need to give credit card -just phone them and they will set it up with no credit card. Poor streaming is because of your connection and provider not because of Roku.

Streaming with Ease!

I love this device. Roku 1 was easy to install. I use it primarily with netflix but also enjoy the other channels. Satellite charges were not worth the limited enjoyment. I am getting great movies and music with no monthly fees!

Bought this for netflix and it is just awful. Constantly buffering and very low quality video. Buy something better, this is a waste of money.

Almost returned...

First, setup requires you to make an account and at first and second and third glances they require credit card info. This is BS and not mentioned in the packaging or web pages. I searched the web and it turned out there is a way around this, but I didn't notice it at first, or it wasn't there at first. I would have returned it if I couldn't get around that. Obviously, Roku wants your account to be 'ready' should you want to buy some stupid secondary apps or services, but if you are using this mainly for Netflix or whatever it's none of their business. Second, Netflix streaming is OK (I think, just barely), but streaming from a local PC caused constant hiccups using two different apps. It is not usable for us a PC to TV streamer. Third, I haven't received the Cineplex offer advertised at time of purchase. The site says one should receive an email within a few days. Fourth, this thing gets really hot and it's hot all the time. Such a waste of power. No off switch. This product and manufacturer feel scammy/amateurish and I would have returned this Roku if it was for me. Instead it was a gift for a person with really basic expectations who will use it one a month probably.

Roku 1 & Youtube

It seems that the Roku 1 will now do YouTube. That seemed to be a complaint before.

Good buy

Greetings all, I bought this on the US Thanksgiving Day in Canada at FutureShop for $[...]. For my purposes, it performs flawlessly. While I have an HDTV, many of my generation are still using older TV's. This unit will work with them, as well as the Roku 2 will. The Roku 3 will not. If one is hard-of-hearing, they might be better off with a Roku 2 or Roku 3. They have a headphone jack in their remote. At $[...], the Roku 1 has to be a best buy. Dave.

Heads up people, youtube is available to most all roku devices now, well for months actually. You just have to add the channel. Even the older xd and xds models.

Everything as expected!

It does exactly what is advertised. Easy to setup and to use. I'm happy to have a cheaper choice than Roku 3 without YouTube.

Roku 1

Product very good but I am disappointed how much extra it costs to buy the Roku 3 just to get YouTube. If YouTube was made accessible to Roku 1 owners, the product would be perfect

Works well - but no You-tube access

This is a pretty neat little gadget. It needed help from the Tech Support at Roku to set up and took about 30 minutes to set up with their help. After that it has been working like a charm. It allows you to access a lot of free web channels including Netflix. One of the biggest drawbacks of Roku 1 is that it will not allow you to access You Tube. According to the Roku website, you need a Roku 3 for that. They claim that they have plans to enable Roku 1 and 2 to receive You Tube later. I am thinking of returning my Roku 1 and getting a Roku 3 instead. Other than that, I am very happy with the unit.

great device once set up

It took several attempts to set up my account (you have to enter a code on the Roku website that appears on the TV - the setup froze several times requiring a new code each time). But once I got through the full setup process it has worked very well. It is easy to add channels, there is a good selection of both free and pay channels, the streaming has been good with no delay or stuttering, and the navigation is very simple and intuitive. I compared the three new Roku models and chose the Roku 1 because I wasn't interested in the better remote for gaming or for the earphone plug, and didn't see any advantage in having the better processor in the Roku 3. If you just want this for accessing channels like Netflix, TED Talks, etc., this model is fine.
