awesome TV

Pros- picked this tv up for nine hundred in store the size colors are amazing picture is great HDD plugs right in and it supports many file types burn in protection 3D and smart its samsung cons- very "wobbly" once attached to the base the base is VERY large (it almost didnt fit on my tv stand thats made for 60" tv's) all in all a great buy the price is dirt cheap for top brand name tv like this. it is my first plasma and im glad i went with it. i did ALOT of research before commiting to plasma and i cant believe i watched led for so long now. the picture on a samsung plasma is far superior and burn in is a thing of the past. i think plasmas just have a bad stigma because people dont do their research. my only real complaint so far is the weird base that has legs instead of being flat it almost dosent fit on my tv stand that i bought for this tv. .the legs go right to the front and back egdes of the stand but thats not a big issue. the tv looks and sounds great im very impressed by the sound it puts out on its own. if your thinking about pulling the trigger on a plasma this is the one you want. you wont find a better deal anywhere

various problems

The "power" button in the remote control simply stopped working after 3 months. The batteries in the remote also don't last more than 2 months. And the "Hub" software is awful, every now and then it loses the resolution and we can see only the upper half of the icons (in netflix, youtube, the hub main page...). And when this happens, subtitles also stop working. The remote have a "touchpad" for navigating instead of left-right-up-down buttons, I really didn't like that either. :-/ The image quality is great, we would love the TV if it weren't for these software problems and non-sense remote.

EXCELLENT TV! - Calibration essential!

Bought this TV recently... 100% agree with previous review, picture settings out of the box were not great (as expected). Google'd some calibrated settings and I was amazed at the difference in picture quality, it truly was night and day. I am having proper calibration done in a month's time so, I will compare before and after but i'm still more than happy as it is right now. I primarily watch sports, hence why I stuck with plasma and so far I have no issues with motion, banding, streaking etc... Football and baseball look great, will be curious to watch hockey as the season approaches, which I know can be the most problematic with the white ice surface, however this is an issue with just about any TV from my experience. I have 4 plasmas, and and LED. Glare is as expected from any plasma, but not as bad as the new LG panels. If you have it in a bright room, just have dark curtains or black out liners and you will be fine. There is a slight buzz if you mute the TV, but again this is not unheard of, I've had a similar buzz from other plasmas in the past and it really isn't that bad on this TV and you can not even hear it if you have the volume at a normal level. Overall this is a great plasma with an impressive picture for a mid range plasma. Again calibration is a must with this TV!

Excellent TV, Calibrate Priority #1

This TV has been excellent. At first I found the picture to be a bit drab and leaving me a bit underwhelmed. I soon after googled some others setting and tweaked them for myself. What a great difference! Night and day.

Great TV, but too fast for sports

This is a must read if you about to get this TV. This TV has great colors and the smart TV is nice too. This is TV is simply too fast and it can capture the strobe lights of cameras during Hockey or Basketball games. In real time you would see a fickler of the strobe lights and once you pay attention to it, you are doomed. I could not get over it, I tried to play with setting but could not find anything to solve the issue. I end up returning the TV to Futureshop and I am going for LED TV. The exchange was very easy. Again, for movies it's great for sport not so much.

Mancave centerpiece

We've had this tv for just a week now. It's perfect. It's set up in the basement and with closed curtains you can't beat the picture quality. The setup was a little tricky since a samsung id was needed. We called customer service, he said that if the smart features don't work there is nothing that can be done. We decided to do a factory reset and then it worked like a charm. One setback is that the TV guide on the tv doesn't match the selected change but instead starts at channel 1. So you would have to scroll down every time or just use your cable box remote. I hope that Samsung updates there netflix app soon to catch up with the app available on playstation. Overall we love it and would recommend this tv for a basement/ mancave.

Update on my previous review

I love this tv. It has a great picture quality and features. However mine suffers from a problem referred to on line as 'banding' and 'DSE' (dirty screen effect). This manifests it self, at least in my case when watching hockey or the olympics when the camera follows a player across a textured white back ground such as skate scared ice or just snow, as diffuse off color either more motionless gray or a tad brighter vertical bands that remain fixed to the scree. These are not noticeable watching movies or displaying a solid white background, nor any other solid back ground color. Just noticeable with sports like those mentioned, and I must admit it is very slight but once you notice it you can't not notice it when watching this type of content. It is also not image retention or burn in, having plasmas for ten years I know what this is and how to avoid it. Samsung customer support really annoyed me. Called them describing the situation was promptly told off stating get the tv alliterated then got hung up on. Called a second time was spoken to a little more cordially but was put on hold then hung up on again. So not sure if I will be keeping the set as I do not know if I can live with this anomaly or not, sad as I really like it otherwise, and the poor rude response from samsung customer service, that really might just be a deal breaker for me.

Nice TV

Pros Great price, nice PQ, lots of features. Cons Seems the Universal feature of the remote can not be utilized because a US zip code must be entered and a service provider selected before the remote can be set up. I suspect there is a work around for this but I simply didn't bother to try beyond that at least yet. The stand. It just feels cheap and worse not very stable. Pivots and that is nice, but asap I am going to wall mount mine. Green line as mentioned in the first review is there right at the right bezel but I don't consider it a deal breaker and believe it is indeed as first reviewer said the tech told him simply a quirk of the set, and I think with out reading that review I would likely not have even noticed it. My set also has no audible hum that I at least can detect, even with audio on mute, neither a pro nor a con but I thought it worth mentioning. Some people just like to critique things a little too much. Reminds me of when I bought a 36" crt and was put off by the geometry problems of the set (straight lines including black bars being displayed curved) I returned 3 sets from three different brands until I realized that it inflicted every make to some degree. This is a nice set and at the current sale price a great deal.

Great Deal

Great picture quality with good black level, but like everyone says it suffers under bright lighting. This TV is best suited to a basement or room with little light because of that. Also, as with all plasmas, there is a buzzing that is audible all the time except during louder scenes, though it is more of a minor annoyance that most people should get used to. The smart suit is a nice addition, but frankly for anyone with a Roxu or Apple TV, is a waste. 3D is also a useless addition, though the 3D playback on this TV is great, especially for up-converting. I do wish it had audio outs other than digital though.

Beautiful Great TV for Sports, Movies and Gaming!

I wanted to upgrade from my Samsung LCD 46" 120hz tv that I bought 3 years ago and decided to go with this 60" plasma. Its been a couple of weeks and I fell in love with it right away. Unbelievable picture. Couldn't be happier with my purchase. For the price I paid and to get all these features and upgrade for about the same price I payed for my 46" LCD 3 years ago is well worth it All I need now is my surround sound speaker system and im set for years!

Outclasses the 60" LED it replaced...

So here's my story. I just finished my basement and wanted a great tv. Currently have the 51" 720p Samsung Plasma in my bedroom and it's been a rockstar. This time I was going bigger and was intrigued by the idea of going to LED so I went with a big name LED (not samsung) and when I sat down to watch it for the first time I almost cried with how horrible the HD quality was whether it was football or a regular show in HD. Given it was too late to return it I sold it within 2 hours on kijiji and immediately bought this one an hour later. Best choice I could have made, I will never betray plasma technology again until I have no choice. The smart features are clever and the wifi sets up easy; was watching netflix in less than 15 minutes out of the box. The remote is unique but clever once you get used to it. Only issue I am having is that it automatically programs itself to control my Bell Satellite receiver so I can change channels & view info but when I hit the guide button it brings up the Samsung guide and is unable to populate it with the bell information so I have pick up my bell remote to actually get the guide up. Bit of a pain but i'll live i'm sure. Bottom line is that this technology is still outpacing LED even though it's older and cheaper.

Really like this TV

I am a pretty picky person when it comes to electronics. The only thing I will say about this TV is that the smart hub features can be buggy/crashy at times. For example, if you turn the TV on and try to access PLEX media right away, it might crash because the TV is logging into your Samsung account at the same time. Try Plex again and it most likely will work right away. There is some 'bugs' like that around the whole Smart Hub, but nothing major that would have me taking this TV back. Picture quality is amazing. I bought this Plasma to be in our dark basement where we watch movies and play xbox/PS3. I can't complain about the picture quality AT ALL. The sound really isn't the best at all. Flat TV's these days are designed to be so, and as a result the speakers usually end up being alot crappier than TV's from years ago. If you use a soundbar or a 5.1/7.1 setup via optical cable, I am sure this would solve all sound issues.

buyer beware

Samsung 60" 1080P 600Hz PLASMA SMART 2.0 3D TV PN60F5500AF Purchased this model in july of 2013 and was originally very happy with overall performance of television. In October of 2013 i happened to notice a one pixel wide green line running down right side of television, right where the pixels end. I contacted Samsung and they arranged for a service tech to pay me a visit and possibly replace the screen. The tech examined the television and to my surprise explained to me that changing the screen would not fix this. He explained to me that the way the pixels are arranged they end in green, which causes this green line anomaly and that that is how all the tvs in this model are made. I went to several stores and was able to verify that all the televisions model Samsung 60" 1080P 600Hz PLASMA SMART 2.0 3D TV PN60F5500AF had this faint green line running down screen. I contacted Samsung again requesting a refund or exchange for a different model and was denied. I was told that they will not help me. They are now if they were not aware before of this problem because i have been calling them almost everyday demanding a refund or exchange. If you dont believe me check it out for yourself and visit a store carrying this model. Pay attention for a minute or 2 at right side of screen. You see it best when watching something that has white or light colours in picture. Its in all video formats and is not dead pixels.. Defect in television Samsung refuses to acknowledge.. Do not buy this television, but please feel free to see what im talking about for yourself..

Don't Hesitate

I got this TV the other day after reading a lot of reviews on many different TVs. I wanted a plasma so I kept coming back to this, for the price and the features it seemed to be a no brainer. A few reviews worried me, flickering during hockey, cheap stand, not very good 3D. I have found all of the above to be untrue. Hockey looked great last night, the stand seems sturdy to me, although I'd rather have a different style. We watched Lion King 3D today and it looked very cool. So if you're thinking about a new TV, I highly recommend this one. Picture looks great, I'll adjust to some settings I found online after some use. The kids love the 2D to 3D conversion, my son is playing Halo in a simulated 3D setting, it looks pretty neat. They say the Panasonic has a better picture, but unless you're buying both and sitting them beside each other, you'll never know, plus its a lot cheaper.

FLickers in Hockey

So i purchased this tv it was WONDERFUL i was very happy I then found out unfortunetly it had an ongoing issue that makes it flicker during Hockey Games. whenever its on the Center camera the intense whites on the screen makes it act like a camera flash is going off every few seconds. So i was forced to take this back

5 Months in Update

I have now had this TV for 5 months and still have not had the Bell 9242 HDMI incompatability resolved. Will wait a bit longer.... but here are some other observations. The stand is weak and the TV does lean as another reveiwer mentioned.. and it is leaning backward so more reflections... I have placed about a half inch of lift on the two rear contact points and it is Ok... The white flickering during Hockey telecasts as mentioned by other reviewers is also a problem which I have not been able to correct. Any one have suggustions? The sound is not as good as Consumer's Reports gave the prior model.. so what was changed who knows, but it is weak. Using the Internet is slow.... my LG 6200 is much faster and an older model. All in all not to bad for the priceI paid on a deal... but not worth anymore.

A Bargain for this much in a TV !!!!!

Had my eye on a Panasonic 60" 3D Smart Plasma (60ST) for months. Every time I walked into the store I'd spend a ridiculous amount of time in front of it waiting for a sale. The Samsung was nice but it wasn't a Panasonic. Let me go back to say that I only have plasma TV's and only Samsung and Panasonic. Panasonic quality is exellent and you certainly get what you pay for.....til now. Samsung has managed to jam pack this TV with every possible feature it could. The voice activated remote control and the mousepad to "write" the channel you want to get to are cool. Great job Samsung !!

Great Picture, Great Price, Software Lacking

The tv picture is great. But I should have followed my instincts on the fact I was willingly going out and purchasing another Samsung product. By all means, the tv does what it's supposed to do, and I haven't encountered any of the "Flickering" people have been mentioning, but like all Samsung products I've ever used it LAGS. Yes, you read it. Like a slow computer. If it gets jammed up from watching Youtube or Netflix, we have to restart the tv. It ONLY happens when using any of the Streaming services. It'll just lag out the whole tv, so no matter what you try on it, good luck getting a picture, cause all we get is sound! We've been told to reset the tv... should you HAVE to factory reset the first day you receive a brand new tv? I mean.. really? [...] Pros Great Picture quality. Rich, vibrant colour. 3D Is Good. Great Connectivity. USB makes it really handy, so you can watch movies from it. Wifi on Tv is handy, if you want to lounge around and surf the web. Cons 3D Glasses are Horrible. You get a glare from the wall on the left and right side cause they stick out too far. Screen is too reflective. Wouldn't recommend if you want to be able to watch the tv with windows open. It's best to have the shades closed... Lag (Could be mine but after a few minutes of web surfing etc, I get lag and need to restart the tv) Overall I do love playing with this tv, as the picture is a lot better than the LCD I had, but I am worried it won't last the test of time. If I had problems with lag from day one, I can't imagine in a few months. I'm crossing my fingers.

The best Value in Televisions

This TV is excellent. If you combine the size, price and smart/3D tv functionality you are left with an absolute winner that screams value, an even better deal if you buy it on sale, The system sets up very easy, even the new style remote control is very easy to understand, so far it's everything I could have hoped for. The picture quality is crisp and vibrant. This unit has tons of features including voice navigation. The IR cable works great with the Shaw cable box, The 3D is just amazing,There was no ghosting, trailing, or halo-effect, so buy this Samsung Smart T.V with confidence.

5 +. Nothing compares to this tv.

Granted there are lemons in every basket of, well, pretty much anything, most of the reviews seem to be missing the point when it comes to this plasma (I am referring to those with the bad luck of banding, bad capacitors etc.). Before I even begin, I want to clarify that this is as close a competitor to the panasonic ST series as you will get. Yes its black levels are inferior, but so is every single other telivision on the market as the samsung 5500 comes in second place solidly (for BACK LEVELS, roughly 0.3). And the colors and uniformity of the picture are better on the 5500. Still, it is certainly inferior to the ST. As for the pentile display... Many pros here (I will admit I prefer "non" pentile as much as the rest but do read on). Pentile displays are capable of brighter pictures, tend to be more energy efficient, and should yield greater longevity (Longer panel life) than traditional RGB displays (according to experts). So yes the resolution suffers a little but I sit 8' away and I can perceive no visible difference at all. I have to be within a foot of the screen to determine it's pentile. To be fair, the 1 con on this set I agree with is that the stand is a little on the flimsy side. I prefere a solid square. The tv does tend to wobble more than normal if touched slightly. But if you're anything like me and you plan to mount the television and/or not allow people to touch it , this is a non issue. You can do absolutely no wrong here and I have never in my life gotten so much for so little.

Good TV

Bought this TV last month and I am really happy with it.... There was a new firmware upgrade from Samsung (June 19th). Many people were complaining about the 'white' issue but I didn't notice any maybe the new firmware fixed the issue or something. the 3D is really nice (this was my first 3d TV). I love the built-in USB which I simply used to stick my USB stick and watch downloaded videos from my camera and the TV plays pretty much all the video extensions (avi, mkv, mpeg, etc.. etc..). Downloaded the Samsung TV Media by Zappo TV app from Apple AppStore. Using this App I can stream any YouTube content to TV using my iPhone ... also project any pictures/video from my phone to the TV.. this is really cool... SMART TV is really good... Picture quality is good.... Before I buy this TV I was reading some research and some people were complaining about it but for the price I just bought it and they were wrong.... really like this TV...

Why would I rate this 3/5?

First of all, I must say that this TV isn't bad for the price... the emphasis though is on "for the price". 60" with 3D capability for the price is unheard of! But if it had cost several hundred dollars more like other TVs in it's class, I would have rated this only 1 star. Here's why... When I ordered this TV from Future Shop, I told everyone that it impressed me in the store, and reviews were mainly positive, but what worried me was that the price was "too good to be true". Turns out it was. This TV impressed me MUCH MORE in the store, where they were showing the special, ideal Samsung-approved content, than it did at home. Once at home I played "typical" content, I was disappointed. I tried various material, including both the 2D and 3D versions of Avatar, which is a very good-looking movie - normally considered good "demo material" for a new TV. Picture quality while watching video/film on this TV is actually pretty good, but anytime graphics or text are displayed, and even sometimes during bright scenes in a movie, there is a pronounced "dotted" or "criss-cross" effect on the screen (hard to describe). It is likely a result of the "Pentile" pixel matrix that this TV uses, which is controversial and some have complained about. Keep in mind I only sit 6 feet away from my TV, while most people sit 9-10 feet away. At 9-10 feet it's possible this wouldn't even be perceived. Anyway, this visual effect really bothered me about this TV. Something else worth mentioning... and this is likely one of the ways Samsung was able to price this TV so low... is that the build quality is terrible!! When I attached the stand (not an issue for some who wall-mount the TV), I found that the parts are all PLASTIC, not sturdy metal as would be expected on a TV this size. I was very careful to attach the stand properly but still, the TV actually LEANS a little. It is not even standing straight! It's only a slight lean (some wouldn't even notice) but it makes me nervous. I seriously fear that if someone were to throw a paper airplane at this TV, it might fall over! And plastic can snap - it's not strong like metal. Perhaps the TV is more sturdy than it seems, but the fact that it leans, combined with those cheap-looking plastic parts, worries me. Another way the poor build quality was apparent to me was when I was hooking up my HDMI cables. One went in smoothly. Another went in, but I had to work on it for a few seconds. The third, just wouldn't go in! I carefully looked at both the cable as well as the HDMI port on the TV, and both "looked" fine. This same cable plugs into other devices just fine. After about 3 minutes of careful wiggling, and finally a bit of force, I was finally able to connect it. NOT very encouraging, Samsung!! It should NOT take 3 minutes to plug in an HDMI cable!!! Finally onto the 3D performance. Well, the reason I had bought this TV was because I had just bought a Sony 60" LED 3D TV, and was happy with everything except for the 3D picture (the Sony uses passive glasses, while this Samsung uses active glasses, which provide a sharper image than passive). In the store this TV looked phenominal in 3D, but again that was with the Samsung-approved content that wa showing on the TV, which is a very bright image, colourful, perfectly balanced contrast, etc. After trying out the 3D at home on this Samsung, I found the picture to be far too dim. During 2D viewing, I had previously noticed that the cell light (backlight) was only set at 12/20, so I went to increase it, and found that it was set at 20/20. Yes, apparently this TV automatically increases the cell light when displaying 3D content. That much is a good thing, as active-shutter 3D glasses are always prone to the "dimming effect". Unfortunately, even a setting of 20/20 on this TV is not adequate. I had read in other reviews that people complained about this

Awesome entry level 60" plasma

I've been using this TV for about a week now. The picture quality is great and it comes with lots of great features. I was never that much of a fan of 3D... until now. I've watched a couple of 3d movies so far and have been impressed with the quality. I really like the ability to use the "allshare link" app on my smartphone to easily share photo's, videos, etc to the screen. I can also use my smartphone as a remote control or setup screen mirroring with the phone. Samsung has really created a great entry level large TV.

I bought this TV back in May and initially loved it,until I tried to watch the hockey game.It looked like the white balance was fighting to keep up.It was switching from white to a light grey, then back, and flickering as it was trying to figure it out.(the hockey game was the only time I had any trouble at all with this TV) I brought it back and tried another one,but it was even worse. It was so bad I watched the rest of the game on my 5 year old Aquos, which works great.I went online and found that Samsung has had this problem for some time and hasn't addressed it yet.So I brought the second one back and bought the Panasonic ST60...fantastic so far ,2 weeks in .

First review.. 1 month in.. problems

Installed this Samsung Plasma a month ago and am very happy with the picture and the sound.... No Hum has been noticed. Remote works really well and it did recognize my Bell ExpressVu Box, though as another reviewer mentioned Bell is not on the provider list for my area... I have called Samsung and been told they are in negotiations with bell. I am running a Bell 9242 receiver and have discovered after extensive testing including a replacement unit sent to my by Bell after I called them, that if you hook it up using HDMI (I have tried all ports, and many cables) that when the 9242 attempts to do it's daily update it will never complete and just continues to reboot until you disconnect the HDMI cable . This is a real pain in the you no where. It is fine if you use Component hook up.. and it only does this with this TV I have 2 LG sets and a Toshiba which work fine., Also it is only with Bell software V193/194 as it worked fine with V191, but you can not prevent the update nor trun off daily updating. Also if I hook up my 9241 with HDMI it is ok.. So something in the Bell software for the 9242 is uncompatable with Samsung TV. I am pretty sure it is a signal that is active in the HDMI cable that was not active before the update and am working with Bell on this now... So more later.

Excellent TV- but ...

I bought this TV last week and installation and set up very easy. The TV is on swivel base which is useful. Picture quality is perfect for HD and regular channels. I have not tried it in 3D yet. I had sunlight shining in the centre of TV but unnoticeable reflection and no loss of picture. I figured as long as light source reflection is right into your eyes there would be no problem with this TV. The Smart hub is very good, voice control very good, remote very good although you are better off with a keyboard if you want to use internet and type. Only problem so far has been and I guess it would be with all new Samsung's is that TV programming can only be set up with Rogers in my area. I use Bell and it is not recognized. The remote has not even recognized my Bell HD box. I need to investigate more.

Twice bitten, aways shy

The TV broke down twice. Once with the power capacitor, and once when the TV screen when bad on at the bottom. Thank goodness for the extended warranty, but I'm not buying a Samsung again. Check on line for all the issues!

Awesome TV for the price

This TV delivers great value for the price. Very good picture quality, smart hub is a decent feature but not really needed in my case. Friends are very impressed when they come over for sporting events, video games and movies (especially in 3D). 3D is very impressive. No cross talk noticed. 3D does not get distorted when lights are on or if I tilt my head in any way. Over 5 in my opinion.

Brilliant colors and pictures

Just bought this TV today and install the stand is a breeze, so simple and easy. Color is just amazing. Sound is very good that I don't need to install extra speakers. It really gives you a home theater feel. I can watch the TV clearly from various angles. The only thing is that I get a little reflection of the window light when outside is bright. The dark and all other colors are just perfect. I have not tried much of the smart TV or internet features yet but so far they work well with my expectations. I am very eager to try the voice command option. I think I will hang this TV on the wall later since the weight of it to me is not that heavy. I lifted this TV with my wife with no problems. Personally I thought hanging this TV on the wall looks nicer and is more safe than having it sitting on the TV stand. Maybe it's just because my TV stand table is not that big.

Why didn't I switch to Plasma earlier

Pros - Very slim - Lighter than my 52 inch LCD - Smart Hub is actually pretty sweet - Can view TV in well lit room - Glare isn't that bad at all (not to me anyway) - 3d is the best I've seen, with no crosstalk - Easy setup - I do not here any buzz sound that apparently most Plasmas suffer Cons - TV only came with 2 3D glasses - Universal remote, although cool, does not control all aspects of Home theater (maybe I got to play around with it as I just got it Friday April 19th, 2013)
