Works For Me...

Thought I'd add my 2 cents. I bought this specifically in a crunch for 3D Studio Max rendering because my ancient XP machine was finally done. My assessment of the performance might be a little skewed because coming from a 9-year old Dell XP laptop, I was pretty happy to see 3DS rendering vastly sped up. Multitasking with 3DS, Rhino and Photoshop was fine by me, although 3DS regular use (not rendering) was only incrementally better than my XP machine - but that could be the software. Having said that, my biggest original beef was not with the hardware, but Windows 8 (my lifelong dream to always have my OS look like Windows XP.) However, after a free online upgrade to Win 8.1 plus a few other tweaks (Classicshell.net works great to bring back the start menu, installed the quick launch toolbar from a tip online)...I can live with it. One negative no one else I think has mentioned - screen has a high gloss to it. Why? So it can look like the iPad? If it's just a hardware trend, it makes no sense esp. if you are doing visual work (ie. Photoshop). You don't want high reflectivity to see yourself in the mirror. As another review mentioned - yes, the keyboard is not ultra solid and I'm still getting used to this new style - needs a lighter touch, not like the old-style keyboards. Wireless seems fine...I have no assessment of the battery life. Speaker is not great, unless I have it configured wrong - sounds "tinny" and almost as if it's not in stereo. Earphones are fine however. Function keys drive laptop features, so if you like to use Function keys without having to press the "Fn" key at the same time in any applications, you go to a Toshiba setting to flip that around. Bottom line: can only advise you to examine the screen glossiness, keyboard and speaker to see if you're happy and look to the other reviews for other factors. I'm giving this 3 stars just to say, I think it's good machine; firmer case construction might have pushed me a bit more positive. Unless you already have one, you might be wanting to get a protective sleeve for the machine if it's going in your backpack, because when closed, the screen doesn't really "ratchet" into place...a very minor minus it seems.

A reliable workhorse.

The C40D occasionally gets a little sluggish when multitasking, but its other attributes certainly make up for this rarely noticed blemish. I got surprisingly close to 9hours battery life using the power saving feature. Thus it ran cool, silent and efficient like a workhorse should. And being built light (and I believe tough) it suits living out of a knapsack everyday. Of course I installed Linux Mint, and tossed win8 after incessantly ranting about UEFI and its outrageous grab for monopoly control over the computing industry no less. But Toshiba offers workarounds, and the C40D works great with mobile broadband under CSM. I like it, and hope Toshibia continues standing up to the big boys in defense of consumer choice.

Great basic laptop

The screen size, speed, ram, and built in dvd were important for me and this laptop delivers well on all counts. It never gets hot and always performs well. The keyboard is comfortable but the touchpad isn't. You need to scroll with two fingers since there is no scroll section at the edge of the touchpad like on other models. The two finger scrolling isn't bad except that the touchpad area is a little small and not as responsive as I would like. The battery lasts about 4 hours. Overall I'm happy with this laptop.

slow

i loved this laptop at first as i got it for xmas, but lately it has been one of the slowest laptops ever. i am unsure if its something ive done or not. the thing is i barely use it at the moment since i just wanted it for schooling next summer, so i hardly have a use for it at the time and its already deathly slow on me. quite frustrating

Disappointing

this laptop made me disappointed from the beginning. Its touchpad didn't work properly. It was hanging and slow in connecting the internet. I don't recommend this brand.
