Okay for Price

I got this computer and was told it would be able to run a few games that I listed. It will run these games but not with many other applications running. After a while I found out that it overheats very easily and will blue screen on me if I try playing League of Legends and run a youtube video in the background. (

Bought this laptop in April. The computer started having issues maintaining internet connects in June. The hard drive crashed at the end on July was sent off by Future shop for repair and after waiting 15 " business" days I am told it is not expected back before August 26th at the earliest. That will be six weeks without my new computer that I have owned just over 3 months. Don't buy.

Worth the price

The laptop has never given me any real problems. Runs smooth for the basic applications I run. Excellent computer at a moderate price for a casual user who still wants something that runs smooth. Haven't tried any extreme processes such as gaming, although it works extremely well for basic needs. Only thing I would change is the processor from AMD to intel, as I prefer intel. Processor has still worked well though!

Could be better

So I was looking for a good starter for PC gaming and came across this. It's a nice sleek and sexy looking notebook. There are 2 problems, first the APU. I would have preferred intel with nividia (which is out now) because overall it's better than AMD. Runs Skyrim on high with no problems but there's always that little point when it drops to 20 fps. I can edit photos with photoshop and program with ease. The second problem is that all the applications are running in 32bit mode? I can't seem to fix this but I guess I have to bring it in.

Good laptop for price

Not bad, it does the job for me. I am using this for music production and programming/cad work. Its really speedy. Unlike the many reviews that say so, the sound does not suck (this coming from a music producer). The people who say it does haven't spent the time looking through the settings in the control panel. The keyboard is OK, but no laptops come with good keyboards anymore. Not a fan of windows 8, but 8.1 makes it a bit more bearable, plus a few tweaks I put on my computer. I barely ever have to go to "metro" anymore. Overall I am happy.

for those of you with freezing problems

this laptop for the prize is spot on, my only complaint is windows 8 and 8.1. make sure after you upgrade that all of the drivers are updated and this should stop the freezing isssues. I had these for a bit myself it comes with 8gigs of ram a 1t hdd and a dedicated vid card what do you expect for the money. also i recommend for the novice user a good utility program like iobit or ashampoo winoptimizer, ccleaner these programs will help keep the computer feeling new and they are all very intuitive, easy to use. i game on this tosiba with no probs at all with med- high setting for call of duty, and metal of honor

Good Laptop

I have had this laptop since about October 2013 and I liked what I got for the price. I have had quite a few laptops over the years but this one seems to be the best one for what I paid for. Pros: It's lightweight, fast. The screen is bright and the keys, though someone complained about keystrokes, are better than all the laptops I've had. I have had latoptops with key boards that either stuck right off the bat or I didn't like the feel (one HP laptop took quite a bit of strength to type and that was out of the box) It's a quiet laptop. Cons: speakers could be better but even still, I'm only complaining because I like to play my music loud at times. It can get a tad warm and I have had problems with it over heating and freezing at odd times but again, I still have yet to figure out if that was the laptop itself or something to do with a conflicting program and what not. It hasn't happened in a while (knock on wood). Don't like where they put the SD slot but that's something relatively minor. I do photography editing but then again, that comes down the what I paid for and what I was willing to pay for-- I would have to pay more for a laptop that could handle the graphics for photo editing (basically I find it slow to load my editing software, which is made by Corel) Overall, def worth the money if you are looking for a basic computer that will let you surf, work on documents and such. I'm not a gamer, so don't know how it would hold up to gaming. For me, it's good and I wouldn't trade it and would suggest it to others.

Toshiba Satellite Is Great

I find the Toshiba satellite to be a great computer. It is very lightweight for its size of 15.6 inches. I only wish it had 3 USB ports not 2. But other than that, the look, size and operating system is amazing

I love love love this laptop! It is super fast and has a timed average start up time of around 10 seconds! It has excellent graphics and I love the large RAM and hardrive! Occasionally the keyboard doesn't pick up some letters but that is definitely over looked by all the other amazing features this laptop has to offer. Overall, I would 100% recommend this laptop to anyone!

Overall not a bad laptop but

Graphics are a huge disappointment . When I get some time, I will have to see if I can tweek it. Left click (as another reviewer said) is hard to manouver. I find the keyboard is easy to use. USB loads quickly and laptop boots up quickly. Loading YouTube videos was fine. It is lightweight. Doesn't feel cheap like some laptops. I'm NOT going to write what I think of windows 8 because it has nothing to do with the laptop lol. I only gave it a 3 because of the graphics. Graphics looked pretty good in the store.

Not impressed

Bought this laptop last week as my other Win 7 Acer Aspire kept getting files system errors / corrupted. I use it as a multi purpose business machine / entertainment unit, as I travel often away from home. I like the large hard drive, the light weight, optical drive, price and its decent style. But otherwise this is my least favorite laptop I have ever owned, having owned at least one since 1998, including 4 Toshibas. Your key stroke need to be precise, has the keys are "hard" to push down, if not, your writing is missing one or two letters per sentences. The touch pad on the other hand is super sensitive, and hokeeey. There is no defined right or left click buttons, so your always fighting with clicking, and trying to keep the pointer on the area you are trying to click on. I thought Windows 7 was good for me, it was easy to navigate modern and familiar, uncomplicated. Well, Windows 8.1 pre-installed is a total mess. Completely un-intutive, and designed for Microsoft's benefit, not the users. Win 8 seems designed to run on a tablet, which this laptop is not nor does it have the touch screen. Note to microsoft, i already have a tablet, and its not running Windows. All I need is a simple computer to run productive programs so I can get stuff done in my day. Another thing, not sure what the computer does, but its always hanging / lagging, not long, but just enough for you to notice and lose your momentum while doing something. With all the updated hardware on this machine, you would think that running the software I've been running for years would be faster - well you'd be wrong. Not impressed over all with either Toshiba's or Microsoft's work on this one.

fully functional system

Have this system for 2 weeks. Everything runs smoothly for word processing and internet explorer which is all I use the machine for. The only down side is the windows 8.1 which I am not a fan off. Given 8.1 is now standard for an OS there isn't much that can be done about it. Overall, I am impressed with the system performance and would recommend it.

Good laptop for the price

Got this laptop as a open box special for [PRICE] . Been working great so far (had it 4 weeks now). Pro's: - quadcore CPU @2ghz -2.8Ghz turbo - dedicated GPU (HD8570M 1Gig) **note: this can be crossfired with APU processor - CD/DVD ROM **note: you can remove this and buy a hard drive tray to have 2 hard drives, see link - Has software that will cache windows hard drive files to ram ( this can be set to 512 meg to 2 gigabytes) - trackpad is good (recessed so you don't touch it accidentally as much) - aluminum display cover and palm rest - 2 USB 3.0 ports Cons: - Dull 720P display - speakers are awful (does not bother me as its a work laptop) - 1 terabyte hard drive is slow (will be replaced with a hybrid drive) - battery is built into the laptop (have to take the back cover off to get at it!) **note: if the laptop crashes to the point you do have to reset the battery, there is a pin hole on the under side of the laptop next to the sd card slot to reset the laptop - metal palm rest heats up when laptop is under load. other notes: Some people had issues after they upgraded to windows 8.1. I did not have any issues. You have to update all the Toshiba drivers and software after the OS upgrade. Toshiba has an update utility that will do this for you automaticaly

Was expecting SO much more

The person I was talking to said it was good for some gaming, good for sites like youtube and was good for note taking and boy was he wrong. I could NOT for the life of me get this stupid laptop to play a youtube video consistently. One video will work fine and the other 10 will stop every 10 seconds (if I'm lucky). I can't log on to any servers without getting lagged out and no it isn't my internet connection because these things work on my sister's laptop. I honestly wish I could snap this laptop in half, and pound it with a sledgehammer but then I wouldn't be able to get my money back.

Very Happy with it

Is this the best laptop out there? No. But when you consider what you are getting for the price it is hard to beat. I have had my laptop now for a couple of weeks and it runs fine. I upgraded to windows 8.1 and have had no issues. I use my computer for surfing, email and light gaming. I will say the track pad sucks. If you get this do yourself a favor and buy a mouse to go with it.

Do not buy. Regret this purchase

It ran fine for the first 3 months I had it. After 8.1 came out, it went downhill and now freezes almost every single time I use it. Freezes last around 5-10 minutes, or it just randomly restarts without warning. Specs for it are pretty good, but don't let them draw you in. TLDR: Don't buy, the problems you will have with it aren't worth saving a few bucks. Get a better PC than this one (not a Toshiba)

Not a good laptop

I have had this laptop for almost a year and I am about to take it in a third time. It has trouble playing embedded videos on websites like youtube, it constantly freezes, the mouse pad rarely works, my usb ports sometimes do not work and it is very slow. My old dual core laptop was much faster than this supposedly quad core laptop.

not what I expected

When I was looking for a computer, a salesman told me to buy this computer because u can game on it, or do ur personal needs too. I get it and the computer runs very slow for first time use (lags), and froze 2 times trying to install windows anti virus. And when I tried downloading games, it took me 3 to 5 hrs to download 1 game. Not too trustable but its still ok for its specs.

I've had this laptop since august and I've had a lot of problems with it. It freezes for 5 minutes at a time, sometimes shutting off halfway through. I've had no way of fixing this issue, and the 14 day return policy from Future Shop doesn't help anything at all.

Excellent Laptop

Bought in summer. Hardware wise this is an excellent laptop. The discrete video is pretty good for gaming. My son plays a lot of Steam games, granted some games have to be played on low settings but they are playable. I don't understand other comments about this laptop being slow. I find it quite responsive. My only complaint is with Windows 8, I just don't like be forced to treat my laptop like a smartphone, but this not Toshiba's fault, When I upgraded to Win 8.1 to get the hobbled start button and be able to directly boot to the desktop rather than the new Metro Tile screen. I started to having freezing problems. I attributed it to a bug in Windows. Eventually it got so annoying that I changed back to Win 8.0 and the freezing disappeared. I would recommend this laptop.

Not to bad for the price

Just bought it for my wife, Her acer Motherboard just died randomly after 2 years. Got this and runs well so far.. Ive seen and read the comments, Seems that there is glitchy models and to Stay FAR away from updating the laptop. I have since Turned off Updates so far. Still on windows 8. Yes the system is super frusterating, Only because you have to adapt to two different desktops. Not just one. Start with the second one,(older style) then gradually apply things to the "Pin tile style" desktop.. it will get easer i promise, its best to take the time and pplay with it for a bit.., Its power to price is fantastic. You get: Dedicated and intergrated graphics card= Dual Graphics processer to run many a godly games, and/or use lower power for on the go. Bad batter life,2.5 hours at the most stretching it. Quadcore power at A10 processors cant go wrong with that.. 8 gigs all you need in ram unless you plan to video edit . 1 terabyte HD.. cmon who fills that up. Overall pricing and power is best bet for lower budget gamer laptop and such. Though i dont recommend a 17 inch solely because its almost not worth it.. Power over size. Again.. if you get a bad model which seems to be the case just take it back and get another one.. They are chances of there being defective ones. Its a pain but its worth knowing what your getting into before. Most laptops die after 2-3 years of hard use.. Cool it down with a fan and it will pay you back in years.

Windows 8.1 incompatibilities

Bought this laptop on sale last 16th of October, and been one of the early adopters of Windows 8.1. And since then been struggling to make it stable up until recently. Out of the box, and I would suggest to many is NOT to upgrade to Windows 8.1 if you'll not wiping the old install of Windows 8 that came pre-installed with it. The feat of upgrading fresh to 8.1 with your OEM keys is possible and getting in depth on how I did it could be told on some other day. Bottomline, the system is good in performance if tweaked properly, inspite of poor battery life and missing bluetooth connectivity. Some would ask "why 4 stars?" --it is the challenge of figuring out how to make it stable :) With a terabyte of space, 8 gigs of RAM and dual-graphics what can you expect more! Do I mention you could use gestures using your included webcam, and you could initiate a face scan to login to windows..?

Impressive Laptop, just not the one for me.

I bought this computer on boxing day and it worked like a charm. Solid, sleek and attractive laptop with a solid build quality. This computer will more than meet most people's needs and I was happy with it. The problem that I ran into was how it ran Starcraft 2. Starcraft is a CPU heavy game, and unfortunately the AMD A10-5745M quad core processor isn't that impressive of a processor. There are much better options out there for the same price, especially with Intel processors. My gameplay was super laggy and choppy as a result. Beware if you are buying this laptop as a gaming laptop.

this is a great laptop that gets abused alot lol

i work in the heating and cooling trade.... and I take this laptop with me to access computer control systems in big boiler systems and heat pump units plus I also play quite a bit of starcraft and tons of steam games wither its working in a commercial field or just gaming at home this has been a built proof unit... yes im sure you can buy a better unit for a lot more cash but for [the price] that's including the 2 year plan you will NOT find a better unit I promise you that I have dropped this laptop, it gets super dusty, its always in high moisture locations (the stuff most people wouldn't dream of using a laptop in) it also has to run a high demanding virtual boiler control program for a heating and cooling system like you would find at your local mall.... its so good and reliable that my 3 other employees bought this unit for their own use.... don't hesitate to buy tis computer as it will blow you away with what it can do lol it does for me everyday

Its fast, quiet, great screen, plays games and video v well. Freezes, loses USB ports, restarts itself for no reason. I wish it would just work as it should, but I concur with previous reviewers, don't upgrade to Windows 8.1. I would even downgrade to Windows 7 if I was you...

good choice for the price

I bought this a couple of days ago it has been working fine, for the price it's a good choice. If you buy this in the store and you are offered the initial installation (which is expensive) with the argument that you cannot do it yourself because you don't have the windows 8 CD and that you wouldn't be able to restore the computer to its factory settings in the future, it is a huge lie, any computer comes with a licensed OS preinstalled, you just have to choose between English or French and you can create the recovery DVDs yourself later, you just have to buy three 4gb DVDs for this toshiba

Excellent Laptop with great features

I bought this laptop as a gift for my son who needs it for university to run AutoCAD and he likes gaming. Getting the laptop up and running was a pain, but no different than any other computer to setup. I now have a total of 10 computers in the house, 4 laptops and 6 PCs. Initially I didn’t like Windows 8.1, but I took the time to learn it and figure it out and now it’s not a problem and once you get used to it, it actually is easy to use. After installing all the updates and getting it current, I went in and removed all the junk that is usually installed on store bought machines. I find these extra programs can really slow down a machine. Once I had it down to just the basics, I installed my own software and wow it is a great laptop with lots of power and potential. My son plays lots of first shooter games and league of legends on it at highest settings with no problems. The wireless connection is excellent which is due to my Asus router that provides a great connection. For the price, you won’t get a getter laptop. A few pointers Give it room to breathe, it does have a fan on the right side and needs to breath. If it heats up too much, it will slow down. Take the time to learn win8.1 it does a lot and once you know a few of the tricks you will love it. Get rid of all the extra software you don’t need. This will slow it down and could even be responsible for any freezes or reboots.

Have problems in Win 8.1 Environment

I bought this Laptop 2 month ago, it had been working properly, but after I updated to Win 8.1, Every time when I was browsing online (Use Firefox or Chrome), it would stop responding , some times it would recover a few minutes later, but some times, it just rebooted itself. I have already updated all the drivers offered by TOSHIBA service station to Win 8.1 version, still doesn't solve to problem. My suggestion is that DO NOT UPDATE TO WIN 8.1.

Be very careful with the updates.

Ok, this isn't a bad little laptop for the price. I bought this on Dec. 7, 2013 and it worked until Dec. 08, 2013. The issue that I had was I lost my ability to connect to the internet. Despite a system recovery to the very beginning, it still didn't solve the issue, nor did attempting to uninstall the wireless device and scanning for new hardware. The good news is, that Future Shop provided me with a brand new one. On a side note, I believe that the Toshiba wireless update for Windows 8.1 could have caused the issue described. I didn't download that particular update, as of yet. I also noticed that the update suggested deleting the driver for the wireless, however I don't have an RJ45 cable at the moment. Once I do get one, I'll give the update a try. If you want to create a repair disc, you better do it before updating to Windows 8.1...or the only way you'll be able to do that is via a 16 GB USB drive (or larger). As far as Windows 8 goes (or 8.1) I didn't really find it too difficult. I did have the Microsoft representative assist me, in store, and he was extremely helpful. I wouldn't want to try to tackle an entirely new OS without first getting more information. 3 stars because of internet issue, which may, or may not, have been contributed to the Toshiba update... 5 stars for Future Shop for making it right. :)

Good and smart product

This laptop runs pretty well, whether you're watching videos, playing Hi-res games, or doing work. It has a fast startup, you'll be on the login screen in a couple of seconds. The fan is on the side, so there's no need to worry much about overheating, and it doesn't make a loud noise. Great built-in sound options, the surround effect is nice. Overall great product by toshiba, I didn't give the 5 star only because of the lenght of the battery charge.

Happy with the machine

Out of the box I have been impressed with the hardware. The keyboard is quiet, fan is quiet, screen is very nice and the key shortcuts are OK. I am not a fan of having to push Fn to use F keys and I can not see ever needing the many Alt Characters splattered about the keyboard. The thing that is very frustrating about the computer is the operating system. I found Windows 8 and subsequent install of 8.1 a real pan in the butt. All the problems I have had so far have been with the OS. I had to do 3 updates and restarts before I could get Windows to allow me to see the 8.1 update in the Windows Store. This being said, the operating system is not why I bought this machine and the OS woes will be common across the board. There are incompatibility issues with 8.1 and some of the Toshiba stuff. Get the driver updates from Toshiba, not the Windows defaults.

I also have an i7 cpu computer , same ram , simular video card and its a lag monster. i dont care anymore what benchmarks say about the A10 processor.. it compeletly dominates the i7 at everything except benchmarks. anyone who plays high res fps games or opens 26 videos at once will notice right away .. the a10 is at a stead jog pace ... the i7 got bugged out before you could open 15 videos. use the i7 if you need an extra heater in your room. this here computer runs very cold and quiet , often the cpu fan is not even on ... its got an onboard monitor .. runs usually from 0% too 46%.. i have also never seen the cpu work harder than 57%. super great value in this computer... very light , thin , quiet.. just well made.

crashing - freezing

I have owned this computer for 5 days and it has frozen and crashed more times than my old computer that I had owned for 5 years. I have returned it to for an exchange for a new computer and will see if it was a one off. Will keep u up 2 date when I have the new one up and running. The speed of the computer was as advertised and was spectacular, but if it freezes and crashes it doesn`t matter how fast it is. Looking forward 2 a new one.

Great For the Price!

I bought this laptop because of the great specs and the low price. I have to say im not dissapointid. It runs most games and programs smoothley with no noticable frame rate drops. It starts up very quickly in usally under 10 seconds. I give it a 4/5 because there is no backlit keyboard, no bluetooth, and the battery life is just ok. I recommend this laptop.

Very Happy

I use this computer for CAD and I am very happy with the performance and the price was right. The wifi was slow but I believe it was windows 8 causing this once I ran it through windows 8 it is good

Cannot Stream Videos Very Well

I must say that most of the features on the computer itself are exception. It has a very sleek design, plenty of space, and can run games extremely well but it cannot stream videos. They buffer and load extremely slowly. I was extremely disappointed with that.

Great buy

Compared to other computers it's hard to find the same specs for [the price] I wanted the laptop for causal gaming and it runs most games smoothly
