Microsoft Surface Pro.

Microsoft Surface Pro.
Is it a tablet or a laptop? It’s both!

Not long ago, when you were travelling, going to school, working on the road, or hanging out at the local coffee joint and you wanted to get some work done or enjoy some digital entertainment, you needed to lug your heavy laptop around with you. Now, all you need to do is slip your Surface Pro out of your bag and you’re all set to work and play, anywhere you go.

What’s new?

Making business a pleasure.

Simply put, Surface Pro is a productivity powerhouse. Not only does it feature a stunning VaporMg casing, but if you could peek inside you’d see a beast of a machine. Surface Pro packs a third generation Intel Core i5 processor with Intel HD Graphics 4000, 4GB RAM, and 64GB of total storage1 (or 128GB, depending on which model you choose). If those specs make you think of a powerful ultraportable laptop, you’re not far off. With this kind of high-octane hardware, Surface Pro can throw a lot of power at whatever you ask it to do, whether you’re working on a contract proposal, creating a multimedia presentation, or finishing off a term paper.

Designed to do more.

Surface Pro was designed to look good and feel great in your hands. It features precision crafting and a VaporMg casing, giving it a finish that’s smooth, durable, and a pleasure to touch.

Take a look around the back and you’ll see the integrated Kickstand that makes it simple to prop your Surface up at the perfect angle for working on documents or watching HD video. When you’re ready to hit the road just pop the Kickstand into its closed position and it practically disappears into the casing.

Glance around the edge and you’ll see a microSD card slot, full-size USB 3.0 port, and Mini DisplayPort. The card slot is a handy way to transfer files or expand the tablet’s memory, up to an additional 128GB. You can use the USB 3.0 port to transfer data at super fast speeds, and the Mini DisplayPort allows you to connect to a large monitor so you can display your presentation on the biggest screen in the room.

8 is your lucky number.

As you’ve probably already figured out from the name, Surface Pro comes preloaded with Windows 8 Pro. This is the fully-featured, 64-bit version of the Windows 8 operating system, giving you everything that comes with the standard Windows 8 OS you might find on your laptop and a little bit more too. The dynamic and colourful Start screen is filled with Live Tiles, which not only represent your most frequently-used applications but also provide continuously updated information, like the latest weather forecast or snippets of the newest emails in your inbox.

Windows 8 is built upon the architecture of Windows 7, so it’ll run almost all of your favourite Windows 7 applications. When it comes time to get some serious work done, you can switch to the Desktop view, which looks like an improved version of the familiar Windows 7 desktop. In addition to any Windows 7 programs you’re using, you can browse and purchase apps from the ever-growing selection in the Windows Store, which is preloaded right on Surface.

Windows 8 Pro includes BitLocker Drive Encryption, which encrypts your data and keeps your sensitive files safe. Surface Pro also comes with a one-month trial for Office 365, so you can test drive this versatile, cloud-integrated productivity suite and determine if it’s a good fit for your needs.

Accessorize your way to greater productivity.

Surface Pro includes a digitizer pen, giving you greater precision for drawing and note taking. Use the pen to provide feedback on PowerPoint presentations and draw diagrams on PDFs, just like you would on paper.

All tablets come with an onscreen, virtual keyboard, but if you really want to hit those high words-per-minute numbers, you’ll need an actual physical keyboard for your fingers to tap-dance across. Surface Pro has you covered – literally – with the innovative Touch Cover and Type Cover accessories (both sold separately).

The Touch Cover is a thin cover that magnetically clicks into place and provides a pressure-response keyboard with touchpad, giving you the ability to type faster and more accurately than you can on any virtual keyboard. It’s spill-resistant, easy to clean, and the keys are automatically disabled when you fold the cover around the back.

The Type Cover is made for keyboard jockeys who prefer the responsiveness of mechanical feedback. It’s one of the thinnest mechanical keyboards ever made, includes a full row of function keys and touchpad, and, like the Touch Cover, puts the Surface Pro’s display to sleep when the cover is closed.

The power to play.

Surface Pro is equipped with a gorgeous, Full HD 1920 x 1080 ClearType display, making your videos, games, documents, photos, and apps look amazingly clear and sharp. As much as Surface Pro is designed to maximize your productivity, it’s also a great machine for playing games, watching videos, and enjoying music. The two 720p HD video cameras (front- and rear-facing) make it easy to stay in contact with loved ones around the world through video chat, and the front camera is angled so it’ll shoot straight ahead when the Surface Pro is propped up on the Kickstand.

Microsoft Surface RT.

Surface Pro is an amazingly powerful portable workhorse, but you might be looking for a simpler tablet experience that still gives you all the fun and many of the cool features found in Surface Pro. Meet the Microsoft Surface RT, which has the Surface Pro’s sophisticated, modern design in a slightly thinner and lighter form factor. Surface RT runs Windows RT, which uses the same fun and practical Live Tile interface and runs apps exclusively from the Windows Store. It comes preloaded with Microsoft Office Home and Student 2013 RT Preview, so you can still get some work done while you’re updating your status, checking in on friends, playing games, browsing your favourite sites, and much more.

Why you want it.

It’s a simple, yet amazing concept: Surface Pro is a portable, attractive tablet with the power and versatility of a laptop. Combined with the innovative Touch Cover (or Type Cover, if you prefer), Surface Pro gives you the ability to be more productive and have more fun everywhere you go.
