Coffee lovers, meet your new best friend: the single serve beverage maker. These specialized brewers work with pre-sealed cups of coffee ingredients to create the perfect cup of coffee, every time. If coffee isn’t your thing, these single serve makers will still make a great addition to your kitchen counter because they can also create delicious teas, hot chocolates, and cold drinks, all at the touch of a button. It’s like having a café right in your kitchen.
The secret to this beverage perfection is in the flavour cups, sealed air-tight to keep flavour and freshness locked in. The single serve brewers pump water through the cups at just the right settings to create the perfect drink – all you have to do is select your flavour, add water, press the button, and enjoy.
The Basics
There are three main single serve brewing systems to choose from at Future Shop: Keurig’s K-Cups, the TASSIMO T DISC system, and Nescafé’s Dolce Gusto.
Keurig K-Cup System
Keurig’s single serve brewers use a design that delivers the precise amount of water at the right temperature and pressure to create the best flavour. Each K-Cup contains a specially measured amount of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate, along with an advanced filter. The brewer punctures the K-Cup, pushing the water through so it mixes with the ingredients and letting the resulting beverage flow into your mug. Keurig’s brewers work fast, producing delicious drinks in under a minute, and the Keurig system is renown for having a wide variety of flavours to choose from.
TASSIMO T DISC System
The TASSIMO system is smart enough to adjust the brew temperature, water volume, and brew time for each drink automatically, so each beverage comes out just perfect without any extra work on your part. The secret to TASSIMO’s smart brewing technology is the bar code printed on each T DISC – the brewer reads the bar code and tailors the settings as needed for that drink.
This innovative technology allows you channel your inner barista by combining different T DISCs to create unique flavour combinations, ranging from iced coffees to specialty hot chocolates to chai tea lattes. Don’t hesitate to experiment – since all the brewing occurs within the T DISC, there’s no taste transfer when you switch between flavours, and there’s next to no clean up either.
Nescafé Dolce Gusto System
The Nescafé single serve brewers, provided by Krups, like to work under pressure – 15 bars of pressure, to be exact, just like the machines in your local coffee shop. The innovative Smartcapsule pods are specially designed to customize that pressure, depending on the type of drink. Certain drinks, like espresso, come out best with high amounts of pressure, while a latte macchiato’s frothy milk prefers less pressure. Each pod has the ability to self-regulate the precise amount of pressure to bring out the best flavour and texture of each individual drink.
Fancy café-style drinks are created using multiple pods – for example, to create a latte macchiato you’d insert the milk pod first, which fills most of your mug with steamed, frothy milk. Then switch to the espresso pod and finish off the delicious drink with a shot of smooth, full-bodied espresso.
Extras - FLAVOURS, VARIETIES, AND ROASTS
Keurig K-Cups
With a ton of varieties, flavours, and brands of K-Cups to choose from, half the fun of owning a Keurig single serve brewer will be experimenting to find your new favourite drink. With vendors like Green Mountain, Van Houtte, Bigelow, and Twinings you might find it difficult to settle on just one new favourite.
TASSIMO T DISCs
With coffees, lattes, cappuccinos, teas, and hot chocolates from vendors like Nabob, Maxwell House, Gevalia, Twinings, and Suchars, you’ll have plenty of delicious drink options to offer the guests at your next dinner party.
Nescafé Dolce Gusto
The Dolce Gusto flavour selection sounds like the menu of your local coffee shop, with options like cappuccino, caffe lungo, latte macchiato, chococino, mocha, cappuccino ice, and Nestea Peach iced tea. It’s hard to go wrong with any of the flavours available.
Coffee Roasts
Not all coffees are created equal, especially in terms of how the beans are roasted. Roasting coffee beans brings out the flavour and aroma that’s normally locked inside, and the type of roast will have a strong effect on the ultimate flavour of the coffee. Understanding these different types of roasts will help you get on your way to coffee nirvana.
Light roasts like New England are lighter brown in colour and have a milder taste. American roast is a medium-level roast, which is generally not too light or heavy in flavour, and is very popular in – you guessed it – America. If you prefer something darker try French roast, dark French roast, or Italian roast – these types tend to have a stronger flavour with more bitterness and less acidity. Try out a few different roasts to discover which matches your palette the best.
